MASTERCLASS / by Rita Maia
Best known as an international club DJ and broadcaster at Gilles Peterson Worldwide FM, Rita Maia is also a curator, record collector, creative director and filmmaker. She has recently co-directed LISBON BEAT - Batida de Lisboa, an exuberant documentary portrait of a city and its musicians which highlights the innovative Afro-Portuguese music scene thriving on the outskirts of Lisbon. The film was selected at IndieLisboa'19 and Sheffield Doc/Fest'19, among other festivals, and will be the Opening film of the 7th edition of IberoDocs, the Ibero-American Documentary Film Festival in Scotland
‘There is a short, sharp blast of energy in this brief music documentary about the African-Portuguese music scene in Lisbon’s outer suburbs. (...) The music is an engaging mix of digital and analogue, new and old. (...) a great way into people’s hearts and minds, a royal road, perhaps, to both the conscious and unconscious mind ‘-
Originally from Lisbon, with a family background from Goa, India, and based in London most of her adult life, Rita’s Worldwide FM show Migrant Sounds showcases new artists from around the world from the new UK dance floor urban movements in electronic & Jazz while also bringing forward music from the emerging scenes in the African countries of Portuguese language - Angola, Mocambique, Guine Bissau, Sao Tome, Cape Verde as well as Brazil and Portugal.
This masterclass is part of the 7th edition of IberoDocs, the Ibero-American Documentary Film Festival in Scotland (26 FEB - 15 MARCH) and it has been brought to you with the support of SCOTTISH DOCUMENTARY INSTITUTE, Camões - Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua and the University of Edinburgh.
